Cinco de Mayo

Cinco De Mayo was a great time again this year. The party started Friday evening, when lots of folks gathered around campfires and had several libations as Rob played background music in the Pavilion. The celebration started again Saturday afternoon, with one of the Ranch’s most anticipated activities, the busting of the Pinata. Several campers took a shot at breaking it, some with more success than others. When it finally broke, in a shower of candy and airline-sized bottles of liquor, there was a mad scramble for the goodies.

Many perms and campers joined together in a Cinco de Mayo potluck. There was lots of delicious food to be had, and everyone had a great time. Toward the end of dinner, an announcement was made that Tim & Tony were celebrating their 22nd anniversary. A large round of applause followed, partly for their longevity, and partly for the huge cake everyone was invited to partake in.

At 9ish, the Dance got underway in the Pavilion, with Rob spinning lots of tunes to “shake your bon-bon” to. The crowd was entertained by special guest Alicia Dos Amantes, who performed three numbers that  everyone enjoyed. The night finally wound down around midnight, with plenty of satisfied partiers headed to their beds to recuperate, and looking forward to doing it all again next year!

We are very lucky to have such a great group of people on our team at Rainbow Ranch. Our manager, Gwenn, who has been with us for several years, is doing a spectacular job making sure everything is running smoothly. Please welcome Reece, Rob and Tony. These guys have been ranch family for quite awhile now and are now part of the team. Please say hello when you see their smiling faces.

In June, we will be building a deck onto the pavilion. Come check it out next time you’re here! It will be a great place to hang out, catch some sun, and relax. It should also be a happening spot for special events, bands, etc.

We will be putting new photos on the website starting this week. Please check them out when you get a chance.

We have started a new Facebook page and will be uploading photos, information and occasional deals and discounts. Stop by and “like” our new page at:

UPCOMING EVENTS AT RAINBOW RANCH

Toga Party and Tree Planting Weekend – March 26th

Rainbow Ranch, like so many other places, has lost some trees this past year due to the draught and storms. We know that the trees are one of many things that set us apart from other campgrounds and we are doing what we can to ensure generations of LGBTQ folks just like yourself will have them to enjoy for years to come. Each guest that brings a tree to be planted here at the ranch will receive $25 off of their stay. Trees must be tagged/marked stating the type/species, must be at least three feet in height, and be of a hardwood species. Trees that will eventually produce shade for our campers will be much appreciated on those hot summer days. If you don’t have room for a tree in your car, then don’t worry because we’ve got you covered. There are a few local nurseries around the park, and we can go and pick one up for you so that you too can be a part of the preservation.

On Saturday evening, the annual Rainbow Ranch Toga costume party and dance will be held in the pavilion. So, bring a tree and a sheet and join us for a fun weekend here at Rainbow Ranch.

Trailer Trash / Trash Disco Weekend – April 2nd

Come join us here at Rainbow Ranch for the annual Trailer Trash / Trash Disco weekend. A prize will be given for the site and costume best depicting the “trailer trash” (or “tent trash”) theme. Saturday evening bring your favorite cocktails and join us at the pavilion to Disco the night away.

Mardi Gras – March 5th

It had been a few years since Mardi Gras had been celebrated here at Rainbow Ranch, but it returned in a big way this year. On Friday evening, as guests arrived, they were invited to bring their favorite cocktails to the pavilion and get to know their fellow campers. On Saturday afternoon, guests either entered or viewed the Rainbow Ranch Mardi Gras “Golf Cart” Parade. Beads, candy and other goodies were thrown from the golf carts with one cart was even stopping along the parade route making Hurricanes for the spectators. There were about twenty entries this year and we hope that will continue to grow in the years to come. The best three decorated carts were awarded prizes. First place went to Ron for “Lady of the Lake”, second place went to Blake and Brian for “Easy Go Bordeaux”, and third place to Paul and David for “Court Jester”.

Saturday evening guests got to together again for a Creole/Cajun potluck dinner. There sure are some excellent cooks here at the ranch and there was something tasty for everyone. The dinner was followed by a Bal Masque that included awarding a prize for best costume. Congratulations to Robby for his “Court Jester” costume. The remainder of the evening was filled with great music and dancing. Special thanks to Rob for planning, coordinating, and hosting this fun filled weekend.

Be sure to check out the Rainbow Ranch website soon for pictures of this event and others.

Ranch Positions!

We are pleased to announce that all positions at Rainbow Ranch are filled. We have three new additions to the Rainbow Ranch crew. Please welcome Reese and Rob and Tony.

Reese is filling the position of Maintenance and Grounds-keeping, Rob will be handling the day to day housekeeping of the park, while Tony will be helping us out in the office.

We hope you will join us as we welcome these three into their new roles and enjoy seeing their smiling faces around the park.

Howdy y’all from Rainbow Ranch!

It’s been sometime since our last emailing, but we just had to share some exciting news about the great week we have planned for Mardi Gras (March 4-6th).  Grab your friends and join us as we will be having a Golf Cart Parade for everyone.  Come and be part of the parade, or be part of the eager throngs screaming for prizes and beads.   We are sure you will all have a great time! There will also be a Cajun / Creole potluck dinner, as well as a Bal Masque / Dance (Costumes not necessary, but Masks are requested).

We invite everyone to Rainbow Ranch for a great Mardi Gras Weekend. Hope to see you there!

CINCO de MAYO
Rainbow Ranch was the place to be for this year’s Cinco de Mayo celebration.  Saturday evening all came together for a great Mexican food potluck with lots of good food and some very original dishes.  Afterwards, children of all ages enjoyed the traditional challenge of breaking the piñata which was filled with all sorts of goodies.  You just never know what you might find in our piñata!  A little not widely known fact is that the Cinco de mayo weekend is also the Annual Birthday of the ranch which started in 1996!

MEMORIAL DAY
The Rainbow Ranch owners and staff would like to thank all of those that attended for our Memorial Day event.  It was truly an amazing and “memorable” weekend for all of us.    The Memorial Day show was one of the productions ever held here at the ranch.  Thanks to Ron and Tim for putting it together for us again this year and all of the performers that made this an amazing show and volunteering all of your time.  Thanks to all of our guests, we were able to raise a substantial amount of monies that went to our chosen charity.  We are always looking at way to improve your stay and the show each year so please let us hear from you if you have suggestions.

VOLLEYBALL TOURNAMENT
What a great turnout we had for our annual volleyball tournament.  On Saturday morning, we all met at the court to choose teams, discuss the rules, and “dance in the sand”.  The competition was fierce, the laughter loud, and the sand hot.  After about four hours of play, the winners were declared, the prize awarded and then……….everyone made a beeline for their cocktails and the swimming pool. Thanks to all that participated and made this another successful weekend Rainbow Ranch.  We would like to extend a special “thank you” to Brian and Blake for organizing this event this year.

PICNIC IN THE PARK
We had a great turnout for the first annual Rainbow Ranch “Picnic in the Park” with nice breezes off the lake.  Everyone brought their picnic baskets, beverages and blankets down to the lake front for a wonderful day of games, visiting, and good food.  Also included was a birthday party for Rita, affectionately known by all here at the ranch as “Mom”.

INDEPENDENCE DAY
What a wonderful weekend we had this year for our Independence Day celebration here at Rainbow Ranch.  Guests began arriving as early as Thursday to get settled in and geared up for the activities.  We had lots of rain on Saturday but it didn’t put a damper on the fun and festivities.  It brought out the kid in most of us who enjoyed playing and yes, dancing in the rain.  However, the skies cleared, the stars came out, and the band played on Saturday evening, leading up to an awesome fireworks show.  On Sunday evening, the ranch hosted a potluck dinner of brisket, and guests brought their favorite side dishes and desserts.  As usual we were not lacking of good cooks and good food.  What a wonderful way to celebrate our Independence.

POOL PARTY / COOKOUT / DIVE-IN

Rainbow Ranch is always the place to be but especially for this year’s annual pool party and cookout.  With these hot Texas days and very warm nights, the pool is the perfect place to hang out and cool off with old and new friends.  Friday night some our guests decided test their singing skills with a spur-of-the-moment Karaoke competition.  Let’s just say as the evening progressed and the cocktails flowed, the entertainment became better and better.  (Or did our hearing just get worse?)  Saturday, the pool filled up quickly as the temperatures began to rise and then around 4:00 PM everyone was treated to hamburgers and hotdogs with all the trimmings.  As the sun went down Saturday evening, we began to prepare for a new feature added to this annual event, the “Drive in Movie.  An outdoor screen was used to show movies as guests watched from the pool, their seats, and golf carts.   If you missed this fun event, be sure to make arrangements to be here next year.

LABOR DAY
If you missed the annual Rainbow Ranch Labor Day weekend celebration this year, you missed a great time.  Friday night was spent by most guests getting their sites set up just the way they wanted them for the long weekend.  On Saturday a lot of visiting and catching up was going on and a spur of the moment volley ball game was also enjoyed by a sizeable group.  On Saturday night, Rainbow Ranch was proud to present Laurel and The Electric Circus band.  It was so good to have them back here at the ranch.  They put on an awesome performance, as usual, with music from all genres that appealed to all of our guests.   On Sunday morning, some of the “perms” organized a volleyball tournament so the sand was flying again.  Some of the spectators weren’t quite sure if they were playing volleyball, kickball, or dodge ball, but it was very entertaining.   After several hours in the sand, everyone headed for their campsites for cocktails and then to the pool.  Sunday afternoon, hot dogs and guest provided side dishes were enjoyed by all.  Thanks to all that participated and made this another successful weekend at Rainbow Ranch.

MLK / Drag Bingo

This year Rainbow Ranch combined the Martin Luther King event and Drag Bingo event. On Saturday afternoon all ranch guests were invited to a mid-afternoon potluck lunch. As usual, there was good food and drink had by all who attended. After the luncheon, guests began to head back to their campsites to prepare for a fun evening of Drag Bingo. Even for those who chose not to “dress” for the occasion, lots of fun was had watching all of the guys and gals rush back and forth between campsites, borrowing this and that, applying makeup and wigs, fighting their way into girdles and panty hose. The outfits ranged from designer high fashion to a group of “village people”. The competition was fierce but fun. The Rainbow Ranch “Drag Diva” award went to Allen J. He sure looked pretty. On completion of the competition and prizes being awarded, the bingo games began. In this too, the competition was fierce and fun….there might even have been a little cheating going on. It was another great weekend at “The Ranch”.

Wine Tasting / Italian Potluck

The annual wine tasting and Italian potluck weekend at Rainbow Ranch was a great success again this year. Even with cold temperatures and a few snow flurries, there was a wonderful turnout for this event. The activities began around 5:00 PM in the pavilion with each guest bringing a couple of bottles of their favorite wines for others to sample. The guests also brought an Italian dish for the potluck dinner that began at 6:00 PM. We were all treated to fabulous Italian dishes and fine wines. After the dinner, some guests began to return to their campfires to visit and others chose to stay and play games in the warmth of the pavilion. As always, the best part of the weekend was the love, laughter, and friendships shared at Rainbow Ranch.

Work Weekend 2010

The annual work weekend at Rainbow Ranch was filled with projects this year and we had a great group of participants. The projects included barbed wire fencing, scrap lumber cleanup, re-flooring and repairing the ranch flatbed trailer, trash cleanup, tree and brush removal, pavilion cleanup, and clearing of a new walking trail. I believe our youngest worker was 7 years old and the eldest was……well, let’s just say a little bit older. The day started about 8:30 a.m. at the pavilion with everyone signing up for the project that they wanted to work on. After a short lunch break, everyone met back at the pavilion for project updates, and then off we went again. Most of the projects were completed by 3:30 p.m. and everyone wandered back to their campsites for a rest and shower. All participants were treated to a steak, baked potato, and salad dinner by the ranch owners. We would like to thank Sylvia, Linda, Philip and Dale for preparing this wonderful meal for us. After dinner, most everyone headed back to the campfires to discuss and laugh about their experiences of the day and rest their weary bodies. Rainbow Ranch owners and management would like to thank everyone for their help this weekend in making the ranch a better place for all to come and visit and enjoy. Gwenn would like to especially thank all of the volunteer project leaders. Be sure and check out the new walking trail next time you visit. It is awesome.

Survivor / Toga

The annual Rainbow Ranch Survivor games were a big success again this year and we would like to thank all of our guests that participated. We had a record number of participants this year with eighteen members on each of the two teams, excellent judges and lots of spectators to cheer everyone on to victory. From Hula Hoop Tic-Tac-Toe to Quick Draw to Fishing, the competition was fierce. Congratulations to the green team for their victory this year. The green team’s “sole survivor”, Kristy, was then awarded a fifty dollar Rainbow Ranch gift certificate. After the games, everyone wandered back to their campsites to rest, have a cold beverage and dress for the Toga party and dance. Ron was our DJ and host this year and he did an excellent job including putting together some awesome music videos for all to enjoy. Also incorporated into the Toga party were some more survivor games, including musical chairs and a limbo competition, which was really something to see with everyone dressed in togas.

Sisters of Sappho

Gorgeous days and starlit nights made the 2nd annual Sisters of Sappho weekend at Rainbow Ranch another successful event this year. The festivities began on Friday evening with a get together for all guests to meet and get to know each other. Saturday the Ranch sponsored a potluck luncheon with hamburgers and all the trimmings. Everyone brought side dishes or deserts and what a great bunch of cooks we had. The food was fantastic. On Saturday evening, Rainbow Ranch was pleased to have Anton Shaw and her band perform for all the guests. As usual, the performance was awesome. If you missed the spring women’s event, be sure and be here for the fall Womyn’s Fest coming up in September.

Easter

The annual Rainbow Ranch Easter weekend was a great success again this year. The weather couldn’t have been better for this great Spring weekend event. On Saturday evening guests were invited to participate in the annual Easter Bonnet contest and “pooch parade”. The turnout was great and the bonnets were very imaginative. After the contests, Rainbow Ranch was proud to present Lisa Marshall in concert. Lisa is an awesome R&B and soul musician from the Austin area that performs throughout the state of Texas. Be sure and check out the website at rainbowranch.net to see the pictures from this fun event.

FALL EVENTS IN REVIEW

Womyn’s Festival – What a great turnout we had for our second women’s weekend of the year. On Saturday evening, we were fortunate to have The Dykes of Hazard comedy group here for our entertainment. Their routines were first rate as usual and we were all sore the next day from all of the laughter. Lots of visiting, laughter, and fun was had by all.

October Fest – What had become an Annual Potluck changed this year as we welcomed back to the ranch the one and only Anton Shaw. Anton and her band provided a great evening of fun and entertainment for all of our campers as she sang the night away. We look forward to seeing them all down here again in 2010 so be sure to book your reservations on 01/01/2010 so you don’t miss it!

Country Ho Down & Hayride – It was truly a wonderful weekend at Rainbow Ranch. The weather was great, the stars were gorgeous, and the hay was dry for the annual country hayride and dance. We had lots of good looking folks in tight fitting jeans, boots, and hats for some great boot scootin’ dancing also. Thanks again Ron for another outstanding DJ job.

Halloween – Rainbow Ranch was the place to be for the annual costume and site decorating contests again this year. Every year the decorations and costumes get better and scarier as the competition grows. Costumes ranged from rainbow ghosts to political figures. Make sure and check out the pictures for this event on our website to see all the ghouls and goblins.

Fall Fur Fest - Rainbow Ranch’s annual Fall Fur Fest was a big success again this year. Beautiful weather consisting of warm days and cool nights set the stage for a wonderful weekend. Approximately 300 of our furry friends began arriving early on Thursday in order to get their sites set up before the “Meet and Greet” that evening. It was standing room only for beer on tap, cocktails, and socializing that lasted well into the night. On Saturday evening, “Mama and Twyla” held a revival and prayer meeting on the Rainbow Ranch stage. At the end of the show was the “best chest” and “best kisser” contest and the competition was fierce, as usual. Once the contests were over, most all of the bears retreated to “the cave” otherwise known as the pavilion for a late night of dancing at the annual “Fur Ball”.

Chili Cook-off - The Rainbow Ranch annual Chili Cook-off was a great success again this year. We had fourteen outstanding entries this year and a great turnout of chili connoisseurs that couldn’t wait to dig in. Thanks to judges Sylvia, Philip, and Brian for their participation in the selection of our winners. First place went to Diane and Tracy for their chili which the judges decided was the best traditional Texas chili. Second place went to Damon and Heath for their non-traditional chicken chili, and third place to Doug and Robert. Gwenn would like to thank all of “her boys” for their help this weekend and for making this a successful and fun event.

Thanksgiving – Thanksgiving at Rainbow Ranch was a beautiful day of good food, good conversation and good times. We have so much to be thankful for again this year, especially the fact that we have such a wonderful place to be able to come to and be ourselves. The Thanksgiving Day meal was hosted by all of the Rainbow Ranch “perms”. Thanks to Mike A. for frying the turkeys again this year. They were delicious! Thanks to all of our guests that participated by bring their wonderful side dishes. Thanks to everyone that pitched in with preparations and clean up, also. It was like old times, again.

On Saturday, Rainbow Ranch sponsored another traditional meal for all of those that were with other family on the Thanksgiving Day. Again, we had another wonderful meal with lots of laughter and love. Everyone pitched in to help make this another successful gathering. Special thanks to Sylvia, Linda, Mike H. and Deb for all their hard work and help.

New this year was our first annual Turkey Shoot. This event was planned and hosted by Sylvia and Linda and Ma and Da. We had a great turnout of participants of all ages. The game consisted of six different colored turkeys running amuck and being shot at by a great many hunters armed with Velcro nerf bullets. The object was to try and get your bullets to stick to one of each color turkey, for which you received a feather of that color to wear in your headdress. The person with all the colors at the end of the game was declared the winner. Of course, we had to have several shoot-offs because we have so many wonderful marksman here at the Ranch. Rainbow Ranch would like to congratulate Keith, our first “Sharp Shooter”. The trophy will be handed down from year to year, so if you missed it this time, make sure you make plans for next year. Be sure and check out the website for pictures of this event and see if you recognize any of our turkeys or hunters. The general consensus of participants and spectators alike was that this is one of the funniest events we have had at Rainbow Ranch. Thanks to everyone for making it happen.
